What is CrossFit? This is the question we all asked before getting hooked in with its chalky talons. Here’s a little definition taken from the CrossFit website:

“CrossFit is a lifestyle characterised by safe, effective exercise and sound nutrition.”

It is commonly considered an extreme way of working out – this is simply not true. It’s adaptable and can be performed by anyone, no matter their fitness level or strength.

Here’s everything you need to know about CrossFit to help you decide whether it’s for you!

What are the benefits of CrossFit?

Regular sessions will lead to improved health, increased mobility, and when paired with good nutrition, can quickly help you on your way to weight loss. What more could you want?!

Who is it for?

Everybody!

CrossFit gyms are infamous for their encouraging and positive environment, making them a great choice for beginners who might need a little encouragement.

Anybody can join a gym with no prior training.

What’s it like inside a CrossFit gym?

There’s lots of chalk, sweat, and music. It’s an incredibly motivating environment that can help you stick to your fitness goals. The group of people that attend a gym lift each other up and become something of a family.

It’s a supportive environment full of all the encouragement you need to get through a tough (yep, really tough) workout.

What is a CrossFit workout?

The workouts are a form of high-intensity interval training (HIIT), incorporating the basic movements from everyday life, such as squatting, pulling, and pushing. The goal is to make your entire body fit enough for, well, anything!

It focuses on:

  • Endurance
  • Stamina
  • Strength
  • Flexibility
  • Power
  • Speed
  • Agility
  • Balance
  • Coordination
  • Accuracy

Have you heard the common claim that someone can’t be both strong and good at running? Well, they can. And they can be amazing at both. CrossFit athletes are proof of it.

A typical class will last one hour, and will incorporate a warm up, working on a particular skill or strength, a workout of the day (WOD), and a little cooldown/mobility at the end.
